How does this work?

Basis is a Translation Memory (TM). This is a database where previous translations are stored. It is updated and supplemented during a translation.

A text consists of so-called “segments”. In the simplest case, these are sentences. However, they can also be headings, table cells, software menu entries, etc.

During the analysis, the segments in the new text are now compared with segments in the TM and the similarity is calculated. Here is an example:

The text to be translated contains a total of 28,164 words. You only have to pay for 15,248 words. How is this value determined?

In the table you can see different categories for matches (“match rate”):

Context Match: A context match is counted when there is at least one segment before and after a segment in the new text that already appeared in the old text and in the TM. One can therefore assume that there is nothing more to change in these translations. The words contained therein are therefore not counted (Percent = 0).

Repetitions: These are words in untranslated segments that repeat. So if, for example, in a text the phrase “We look forward to seeing you” appears twenty times, six words are counted as new once and 19 × 6 words at 33% only. Why is anything being calculated here although the segments are identical? Quite simple: Depending on the context, the translation may need to be different.

Cross-file Repetitions: These are repetitions between files. If the same segment appears in multiple files to be translated, it falls into this category. It is treated just like regular repetitions. The value is purely statistical in nature.

100%: Segments whose translation is already in the TM. However, they must be checked because the translation cannot be guaranteed in the respective context. An example (purely fictional): In the English text, it says in a heading and in a list: “Switching on the machine”. In German, the heading should be “Einschalten der Maschine” and in the list “Maschine einschalten”.

The gray categories between 99% and 75% refer to segments that are similar to already translated segments. They are eligible for a reduced price.

The last category includes all segments that deviate significantly from translations in the TM or are completely new (no match). They will be charged the full word price.

This is how it works: Smart analysis All Translation Memory systems analyse your texts and calculate a so-called “Weighted Word Count” (WWC).
